I am the owner of the Bluethner painting you have featured on this page of your blog and I am ok with you using this image as long as you credit its ownership to me and change the name of the painting to its new name: “Barbara avec gants rouges”. Thank you.

Dear Ms. Jarrin, Thanks for dropping by the blog to comment. It’s been so long since that show of Elsa Bluethner’s, I’d completely forgotten about this post. In fact, I would have denied ever posting this, so, it’s nice to be reminded and to catch up on her career. Congratulations on owning the painting. “Barbara avec gants rouges!”

As for permission to use the image, I checked with both the artist and someone who has published an arts magazine for almost 30 years and it’s the artist who retains copyright of the image unless it was explicitly signed over to you. My understanding is that the artist, Elsa Bluethner, has retained her copyright of this painting.

Your comment has effectively acted as acknowledgement that you are the owner of the painting. That said, there is no requirement that I or the arts magazine publisher know of where an art work’s owner must be credited.

Published writing about an artist’s work and shows is important for most artists as it raises awareness about them and their work. Ultimately, promotion can help the raise the value of their work and, specifically, the painting you own. I don’t fool myself that this blog adds more than an infinitesimal bit to that effort but every little bit helps even if it is a five-and-half-year old posting about an event long past on a science blog such as mine. Best regards, Maryse
