What’s For Dinner? It’s a Toxic Buffet for Whales! With Anais Remili
November 25, 2025
5:00 – 6:30 pm [PT]
ZoomWhat can a tiny sample of whale blubber reveal about ocean health? A fascinating detective story unfolds when molecular ecology meets marine conservation. Postdoctoral fellow Anais Remili takes us through innovative lipid analyses, which let scientists decode what killer whales have been eating. New research also reveals how man-made contaminants travel up the food chain, accumulating in the bodies of apex predators from killer whales to Arctic polar bears to coastal seals. In this talk, discover how a single blubber biopsy becomes a window into an entire ecosystem, what these chemical signatures tell us about the health of marine mammals, and why some killer whale populations are thriving while others struggle. Finally, learn about practical steps that can help protect these animals and the waters they call home.
This is the last 2025 event for SFU’s Café Scientifique. Enjoy!
