Nanotechnology and the Alberta Capital Region

 A Case Study in Integrating Communities, Innovation and Development

• What can cities and communities do to support and benefit from new technologies?
• How can knowledge-intensive sectors develop in ways which account for local contexts and local needs?
• How can benefits and prosperity be made to ‘stick’ to the communities in which new technologies are innovated?

We are developing a partnership to explore these questions and to foster networks which integrate scientific innovation, community development, and urban planning in the development of local ‘innovation clusters’. Our aim in developing this partnership is to inform and research innovation networks which recognize and engage people and place as key constituents of successful science policy and development strategies.

While Edmonton has long been defined by its northerly location as a transportation and support centre, as a provincial capital, and its passion for hockey, Edmonton’s designation as the national centre for the commercial development of nanotechnologies is less well known. Nanotechnology is imagined as a force of change and diversification, recasting the spatialization of the city as a northern capital, attracting a new class of high tech workers and entrepreneurs and bootstrapping a liveable and world-leading city.

Engagement Activities:

We will be hosting three primary engagements as part of our project.  These activities are an opportunity to develop relationships and knowledge sharing across publics and stakeholders, and the focus of our research into how these relations can help foster socially robust innovation processes:

1. Citizens’ Panel: Involving a diverse group of engaged citizens, this panel will be convened over two-days to learn and ask questions and   nanotechnology, innovation and the city-region.

2. Engaging the Communities of the Alberta Capital Region – A one-day public engagement exercise involving a series of presentations for the public and the opportunity to join roundtable discussions with experts, community leaders, and policy officials.

3. Planning Stakeholder Working Group – A working group addressing how communities ‘can plan for innovation’.
